A Western in Song
Posted by Erika Herzog
Weirdly bad fall TV but there is some respite — returning shows are still packing the emotional intensity and providing solid soap entertainment. Yes, I’m talking about Chicago Fire, Parenthood, and Nashville.
Bless Nashville.

Nashville’s Parthenon – just looks like so much fun!
Been worrying because T-Bone Burnett has handed over the reins of the music supervision to Buddy Miller — but there’s no need to worry. I have a suspicion that the music will remain just as great, but will be maybe a bit funkier and more bluesy and fun: a la Buddy. Have seen the first two episodes and am not disappointed.
So this one song, I have become officially obsessed.
I keep a Spotify playlist for all the tracks as they get released. It’s like a life sustaining force when I need comfort food music.
It sort of drives me crazy the lack of metadata in services like Spotify. I mean, really, they should start from that point of too much information, versus the current bare minimum. Because I want to know who writes these amazing songs.
Wikipedia – Blessed Metadata
So I was searching all over. The ABC website for Nashville is a huge disappointment. Not enough metadata.
Read about the production design at this massive Parthenon. Which was interesting, but not what I was looking for.
Finally, it occurred to me to go to Wikipedia. And there it was. The song is written by Jill Andrews, Justin Davis and Sarah Zimmerman (from a band called Striking Matches). Yay. Blessed blessed metadata.
I freaking love love love the song, the video for it, everything. Who knew Hayden Panettiere would be non-annoying and a great singer. She’s my favorite part of the show now (shocking, eh? – was not a fan of that cheerleader movie).
And then I heard they are going to take it easy on poor bad boy Jonathan Jackson. It’s just a total relief because of all the songs his performances are the one that I’m grabbing my iPhone to see who is so great on those songs. A total threat. This season apparently he won’t be so stuck in a box and can’t get himself out.
Beyond all of this fluff, I have been pretty stressed out with the current job search / temping / job developments (knock wood). And having a hard time sleeping and stuff. Money is unbearably tight. Bad times.
So what do I do? I’ve been editing Wikipedia. I find it satisfying for some strange reason. Sort of like coloring. I can fix and clean up entries for folks I am a fan of or care about. A lot of the editing is focused on wymyn because the whole authorship of Wikipedia by majority male editors is 100% unacceptable.
But I also updated the crummy citations on the Nashville discography page — and had my first semi-okay experience editing existing content in tables in Wikipedia. Not for the faint of heart. Shudder!
Okay going to try to get some sleep! Wikipedia Meet-up (I know!) today if I can wake up and get downtown in time. Oy.
…
Oh yeah, an addendum. In addition to wanting to have metadata (songwriting info) on songs, LYRICS!
The lyrics for This Love Ain’t Big Enough are amazing. Like watching a Western showdown crossed with soapy love affair. And Hayden totally sells it.
Here are the lyrics (meant to post originally)….
This Love Ain’t Big Enough
Back to back
Lines drawn deep into the dust
Ten paces forward
Staring straight into the sun
You shoulda rode your
High horse outta town
You no-good, lyin’,
cheatin’ run around
I’m gonna show you
how the west was won
This love ain’t big enough
for the two of us
Locked ‘n’ loaded, it’s high noon
Make my day, you son of a gun
This love ain’t big enough
For the two of us
(This love
Ain’t big enough
This love, for two of us)
Undertaker waitin’
on somebody to go down
I’m gonna take what’s
left of this love
And put it in the ground
It was a knockdown
Drag-out romance
Quick draw
Honey, let me see you dance
Look at who’s the last one standin’
Now !
This love ain’t big enough
for the two of us
Locked ‘n’ loaded, it’s high noon
Make my day
You son of a gun
This love ain’t big enough
For the two of us
Pick the coffin, bury this love
Drive a nail in, baby, I’m done
Pick the coffin, bury this love
Drive a nail in, baby, I’m done
This love ain’t big enough
for the two of us
Locked ‘n’ loaded, it’s high noon
Make my day, you son of a gun
This love ain’t big enough
For the two of us
